PE & Sports Premium
What is the PE & Sports Premium?
Since 2013-14 the government announced that it was to provide additional funding to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools in England. This funding – provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport is allocated to primary school headteachers. From 2017-18 revenue from soft drinks industry levy has been used to double the value of the premium. The funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools.
The premium must be spent by schools on making additional and sustainable improvements to the provision of PE and sport for the benefit of all pupils to encourage the development of healthy, active lifestyles.
Tolworth School PE & Sports Grant
Purpose of Funding
Purpose of funding schools must spend the additional funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.
Possible uses for the funding might include:
- Hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work with primary teachers when teaching PE
- Supporting and engaging the least active children through new or additional clubs
- Paying for professional development opportunities for teachers in PE and sport
- Providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE and sport
- Running sport competitions, or increasing pupils’ participation in the School Games
- Buying quality assured professional development modules or materials for PE and sport
- Providing places for pupils on after school sports clubs and holiday clubs
At Tolworth School we have always seen PE and sport as an integral part of children’s development and lifelong learning. Over the years we have increased resources, provided more opportunities for all children to participate in different activities during lessons, playtimes, through after school clubs, intra class competitions and inter school competitions and festivals. This funding will give us the opportunity to continue to develop and improve our provision for the benefit of the children.
The funding is allocated by the number of registered children (5-11 years-olds) in the Autumn 2021 census. The current funds for our school are as follows:
Nature of Activity 2023-2024
Impact, Participation and Attainment
There were limited opportunities to participate in inter competition last year due to timetabling challenges. In 2022 – 2023, to ensure children participated in physical activity, alongside 2 sessions of timetabled PE we actively promoted a daily continuous run to develop stamina and also delivered 15 minutes of fundamental skills practise every day (daily skill rotation). Half-termly multi skills sessions continued to be offered to all year groups and delivered by an external coach. We also encouraged intra year group carousel activities at the end of every curriculum area unit.
We entered a team in a borough country dancing festival run by Kingston Sports Partnership. 20 year children participated – mixed – 4 boys, 16 girls.
Gold Kitemark: The School Games mark is a government led awards scheme launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to school sport and physical education and the development of competition across their school and into the community. Previously we have received this award at Bronze level in 2016, Silver level in 2017 and then Gold in 2018 and 2019. We were awarded the School Games Recognition certificate for all the hard work you and the school have done towards PE and School Sport over the Autumn and Spring term 2019-20.
Healthy Schools Bronze Award: Awarded in July 2016
Summary of Intra and Inter 2022 – 2023: Last year all children took part in at least two additional Intra School events; these were Sports Morning and a multi-skills/cricket intra year tournament run by Chris Baxter.
